As has been explained, hamstring injuries are frequent in athletes, since they are usually caused by sudden movements or displacement, which are common in sports practice.
Usually, after suffering a hamstring injury, the patient experiences acute pain in the area, which, on many occasions, causes immobility in the leg. In addition, in many cases the patient may feel weakness that prevents him/her from performing day-to-day activities.
When pain appears in the area, the patient should see a specialist. First of all, a physical examination of the patient will be carried out, in which the doctor will be able to check which are the points where the patient experiences more pain.
Secondly, in many cases, it will be necessary to perform diagnostic imaging tests to provide more complete information on the patient’s musculature. Some of these tests may be ultrasound or magnetic resonance imaging, since it is a soft tissue.
How long is a hamstring injury?
Symptoms, such as pain and tenderness, may last: Two to five days for a grade 1 injury. Up to a few weeks or a month for grade 2 or 3 injuries.
How are hamstrings injured?
Muscle overload is the main cause of hamstring muscle strain. This can happen when the muscle is stretched beyond its capacity. A sudden jump, stretch or impact can tear the muscle from its connection to the bone.
What is a hamstring tear?
Fibrillar rupture of the hamstring muscles is a common injury among athletes, which occurs when the fibers that make up the muscles break. If it is a deeper rupture, it is a muscle tear.
